Starter Guide on Search Engine Optimization

What Is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

SEO stands for “search engine optimization”. It includes practices used for increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results. We can also define it as methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors (traffic) to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) — including Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines.

How SEO Works?

Search engines are not humans. They are intelligent creatures which crawl the Web, looking at particular site items (mainly text) to get an idea what a site is about. Search Engine Spiders (or bots) perform several activities in order to deliver search results – crawling, indexing, processing, calculating relevancy, and retrieving. Spiders follow links from one page to another and index everything they find on their way. However, it may not possible for a spider to visit a site daily just to see if a new page has appeared or if an existing page has been modified, sometimes crawlers may not end up visiting your site for a month or two. Once the page is crawled, it is indexed in the giant database.

Whenever a search request comes, search engine processes it by comparing search string in the search request with the indexed pages in the database to calculate the relevancy of each of the pages in its index with the search string. Various algorithms are used to calculate relevancy based on different factors like keyword density, links, or metatags. Based on the relevancy, search engine placed web pages in the results.

Why SEO is important for marketing?

With ease to access internet, millions and millions of people are using “Natural Search Query” to find relevant information. Searches over search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc have become primary source of digital traffic for brands. Greater visibility and ranking higher in search results than your competition can have a material impact on your bottom line.
